Psychology and the human mind are inextricably linked. Indeed, the word ‘Psychology’ is derived from the greek word ‘Psyche’ means mind or soul and logo means an explanation of mind or a soul.
Combining these two words gives you a literal translation of psychology as the study of the mind.
It is therefore, unexpected to find the concept of the mind of many definitions of psychology. E.g- ‘’Psychology is the scientific study of people, their mind and their behaviour’’.
Now, let’s talk about what is actually mind is? & what are its basic functions?
Mind is the complex of facilities involved in perceiving, remembering, considering, evaluating and deciding. In some sense, Mind is the occurring of sensations, perceptions, memory, emotions and desires, it also includes various types of reasoning, motives, choices, traits of personality and unconscious.
The mind in its adjective form is ‘’Mental’’, is that which thinks, imagines, remembers, wills and senses.
According to Cornell University, the mind that thinks our thoughts is a pretty special place. But it is distant from the brain?
A new theory suggests that how and why do humans think and act in the ways they do? To answer this question, Dr Paul Babcock and his colleagues have recently proposed a theory of the human brain that combines evidence from evolutionary and developmental psychology, neuroscience and biology. This theory posits that the human brain is a complex adaptive system, composed of relatively specialised and domain- general structures that work in tendom to generate adaptive responses to the environment. Human thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are rooted in the brain, where a complex network of cells receives information from the internal and external environment, transforming this information into our experience of ourselves, the world around us, and our relationships with it. It goes without saying that how this happens is still being explored.
